In Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM), Purple amethyst is referred to as the “purple outstanding stone”. Amethyst can be considered purple quartz. Like all quartz stones, amethyst amplifies and harmonizes other stones or formulas it is a part of. Here, the purple quartz/amethyst adds the qualities of the purple ray; connecting to higher energy centers, providing a soft deep mellow kindness that helps relieve stress and offers spiritual comfort. It is particularly beneficial for our nervous system and brain.

According to Dr. Robert Gilbert, founder of the Vesica Institute, in the ancient world, amethyst was considered far more valuable than diamonds. It’s cost has come down due to large deposits discovered in Brazil. It has been described in several old texts. It is one of the stones in the Breastplate of Aaron of the Old Testament. It also appears in the New Testament as one of the 12 stones of the Foundation of the New Jerusalem, linked there to the constellation of Aries.

In connection with its affinity for the brain, the origin word for amethyst is the Greek amethystos, which means ‘not drunk’, providing some clues to its ability to clear the head. In CCM, it helps ‘secure the exterior’, called ‘Wei qi’, providing benefit for our immune systems. It also helps balance and harmonize liver energy, particularly related to bloating, gas and nausea.
