In Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM), Ruby is called the red precious stone. The color is associated the element Fire; the ability to generate and feel warmth, to move and flow with strength, to bring light into the dark places we encounter.

The brilliant red color is also associated with Blood, capitalized here to refer to the CCM concept of Blood. We named it the Great Mover because of this association. Blood includes the red fluid flowing in our veins, but it is much more than that. It also includes the ability of our body to carry Qi – fundamental energy – throughout our bodies, via the blood as well as the connective tissue fluids and meridians. Blood also nourishes the body, corresponding with Western concepts of blood. Blood also moisturizes the body, like skin, hair and eyes, but also our brains. it might be surprising to know that our brains are ~75% water, and that that amount diminishes with aging.

With regards to women’s health, concepts of Blood and blood correspond. They are essential for maintaining and nourishing health.

Ruby is a corundum, in the same family as sapphire. Corundums are exceptionally hard stones, being able to scratch almost all other stones with the exception of diamond. Ruby is an aluminum silicate with a very small amount of chromium – Al203 + Cr. Its color comes from the chromium. It is a rare and expensive gemstone. As such, there are many fake rubies in the crystal market. It is also created in a lab. Ruby is considered the ‘king of gems’ by many in the industry.

Ruby is closely associated with the Heart in many traditions. It helps us become more warm-hearted, able to express love more freely.
